Why do timber gates fail, and how do we build them?

The common worry with timber gates is that they rot and sag - and a good-looking joint alone does not prevent it. Early on, I replaced a set of Hamptons-style gates at a Mount Eliza property that were roughly ten years old and had badly deteriorated. They were strong hardwood gates with traditional joinery, and working out why they had still failed shaped how I build today:

Bracing and structure - each design is checked for weight, span and bracing, and a discreet steel frame is built in where solid timber alone would not perform.
Protected cut surfaces - the timber is treated and cut surfaces are protected against rot.
Coating - every gate is primed and finished with at least two coats of quality exterior paint.

Installation: typically 1 to 2 days, depending on complexity and the site.

What timber do you use?

Quality Australian timber. Past projects in our gallery include Blackbutt rural gates and an Ironbark gate for a beach house.

Will my timber gate sag?

Sagging comes from weight and weak bracing, so each design is assessed for span and bracing, and a steel frame is used where the gate needs extra structural support.

Can you automate my gate?

Yes. We supply, install and service gate automation, including FAAC systems. Electrical work is carried out by appropriately qualified professionals where required.
